Who this is for

One city, four very different reasons to be here

Students

Students

Binghamton University (SUNY) and SUNY Broome bring roughly twenty thousand students to the area. Off-campus life centers on the West Side and Downtown — learn the leasing calendar before everyone else signs.

Families

Families & Relocators

Healthcare, education and quiet residential streets draw families who want a real house, a yard and a short commute — without downstate prices. Vestal, the West Side and Endwell are the usual starting points.

Professionals

Professionals

UHS Wilson Medical Center, Guthrie Lourdes Hospital, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin in Owego and the universities anchor year-round professional employment. Most commutes here are measured in minutes, not hours.

Investors

Investors

Lower purchase prices than downstate, a built-in student and hospital renter base, and older housing stock that rewards hands-on owners. Read our plain-English investor overview — no return promises, ever.

What Binghamton actually is

A small industrial city reinventing itself around a major university

Binghamton sits in the Southern Tier of New York, in Broome County, where the Susquehanna and Chenango rivers meet — about 175 miles northwest of New York City, 75 miles south of Syracuse, and just north of the Pennsylvania border. The city itself is home to roughly 47,000 people, with around 245,000 in the wider metro area (figures are approximate, based on recent Census estimates).

This was once a manufacturing powerhouse — Endicott Johnson shoes, IBM (founded in Endicott), and Link flight simulators were built here. That history left behind grand old housing stock, wide streets and a downtown of handsome brick buildings. Today the engines are different: Binghamton University, one of the top public universities in the Northeast; two hospital systems; and a growing downtown of restaurants, galleries and student housing.

It is also the birthplace of the spiedie — marinated, grilled meat on a skewer — celebrated every August at Spiedie Fest & Balloon Rally, and home to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets.
